Professor Zhao currently holds the position of Dean of Graduate School at Tongji University. He's widely regarded as a leading expert in intelligent pavement and heads the "Intelligent Pavement Innovation Team" under the Ministry of Transportation of PRC.

Professor Zhao has dedicated significant time to teaching and researching perception, analysis, and construction technologies of road and airport pavements. He introduced the groundbreaking concept of R2X (Road and Runway to Everything) for both airport and road infrastructure. Additionally, he's pioneered cutting-edge technologies like intelligent pavement perception, utilizing distributed optical fibers, and integrated analysis methods for assessing pavement conditions. In the field of intelligent pavement construction, Professor Zhao is a trailblazer in developing prefabricated structures and processes for cement concrete and composite pavements. His team is actively engaged in advancing topology optimization and 3D methods for future pavement designs.

Professor Zhao has played a pivotal role in over 30 research projects, funded by both government bodies and industry players. The impact of Professor Zhao's work is evident in major transportation hubs such as Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Chengdu Tianfu Airport, and Shanghai Chenhai Highway. His contributions have earned him prestigious awards, including two second prizes for the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, as well as over 10 provincial and ministerial-level awards. His research findings have significantly influenced national construction methods and industry standards.

Leveraging the outcomes of his research, Professor Zhao has contributed extensively to academic literature, publishing over 100 papers, with more than 60 indexed by SCI and EI. He has authored a distinguished monograph and contributed to the publication of three textbooks.
