Manager’s corner – Part 8

YAYOI KUSAMA MUSEUM

Everybody knows Yayoi Kusama, right? She has been acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan.
When she was 9 years old, she began to experience hallucinations which she has described as flashes of light, auras or dense fields of dots. These symptoms made her feel dizzy all the time and no one can help. So she decided to start painting, to relieve her pain. She used her work to express her vision about self-expression, inner life and even sexual expressions. Kusama often says: "If it was not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago”.

The exhibition I saw was『未来へのわが展望をみてほしい — 植物とわたし/I Want You to Look at My Prospects for the Future: Plants and I 』This exhibition contains plant-themed works and self-portraits from early to present.

Yayoi Kusama museum presents the exhibition in a spiral manner. Visitors must view the exhibition level by orders. The introduction film at the beginning, the collage work of her paintings, the soft sculpture, the installation arts in between and the light effects used to highlight the work itself. Top floor is an opening space, allowing the viewers to enjoy the installation art at close range.

Each floor gives the viewers different thoughts and feelings. Whether it is the paintings, sculptures or light installations, even the elevators are decorated and presented with dots.

What impressed me the most is the quotation from Yayoi Kusama” I think the earth is a dot, the moon is a dot, the sun is a dot and humans are tiny dots in the world. We are all just a miniature dot in the universe.” Unfortunately, some floors in the museum is not allow to take photos, so I brought one of Yayoi Kusama’s book to share some of her work with you!
